Like many of his colleagues in suffering, for Nicolae Purcărea the Christian faith was the last stronghold of inner strength. "Do you believe in God?" was the question he had heard many times from the aggressors. As a result of his affirmative answer, he was among those forced to take part in blasphemous rituals during the 1951 Easter.
These rituals were taking place in room number 1-basement, as well as in room 4-hospital where we are now. The holy texts were reinterpreted using vulgar words, and Virgin Mary was portrayed in a depraved manner. The detainees were forced to go down on their knees, then worship and kiss a wax genital organ instead of a cross.
The "black masses" had greatly shaken the inner resistance of many of the young people who were forced to take part in them.
