King Charles II
Between 1918 and 1938, the political arena was dominated by the National Liberal Party (PNL) and the National Peasant Party (PNT). The power plays, corruption, and the rise of totalitarian regimes in Europe, all led to the weakening of Romanian democracy, encouraging King Charles' authoritarian regime, political violence, and the emergence of the Legionary Movement.
In spite of being close to Nazi Germany and having some major pro-German politicians in its government, the borders of Greater Romania collapsed in 1940.
