After August 23, Fascist organizations were banned and any activity severely punished. Moreover, detention centers were established for those considered suspects, and Nicolae Purcărea was one of those arrested. Between January 23 and August 20, 1945, he was imprisoned in the barracks in Braşov and then in the Caracal labour camp.
When released, he resumed his university studies, but continued his anti-communist activity within a student association. After the full takeover of power and the elimination of the main democratic opponents, in 1948 the communists repressed those known as having a legionary past. Barely escaping arrest, Purcărea lived for a while as a fugitive, and then joined an armed resistance group led by Dumitru Apostol.
